Dan Mace on embracing your differences to enhance your creativity.
In Dan's latest video he challenged himself to swopping jobs with his twin sister for a day. Lisa who works in law and Dan who is a filmmaker are - it may appear - somewhat set on opposite ends of the scale. Both are very happy with the paths they've chosen in life and in this spot, we learn that it's not what we do that defines us but instead who we are.
The spot is rather amusing, showcasing his various editing skills and animated sequences. It's also a continuation of a greater philosophy Dan deeply believes in; harnessing one's differences to fuel one's creativity. In a recent Creative Mornings Cape Town's event this year - held at Friends of Design on Bree Street - Dan covered this when he spoke about all things surreal and the concept of using what makes you different from others, to your creative advantage. He also brought up his latest film adding that what he does, not what he is but rather that what he does influences his films, so the two coexist. In essence bridging the two, so that his personal life and work co-exists in a somewhat symbiotic relationship.
From feeling 'different' at school, to now being one of the country's top creative exports, the context has completely changed. By showcasing his own vulnerability upfront, he has empowered his abilities to create content that others who share feelings of being different can relate to and in turn inspire to further produce and create.
The above is summed up quite extensively in this Bizcommunity article featured here:
